Pennsylvania Gospel Music Singing School

Singing together with excellence for the glory of God

Instructors

Alyssa Miller

Alyssa is from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. She was homeschooled, graduating in 2022. Born into a musical family, she has loved music for as long as she can remember. She has taken piano lessons for over ten years, and voice lessons for two years. However, when she was a teenager, she found a love for Southern Gospel music. Through listening to Greater Vision, a prominent Southern Gospel trio, she learned about shaped notes. After teaching herself to read shape-note music, she attended Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy in Hartsville, Tennessee. Later, she began attending singing conventions. She sings in a choir, and periodically she and various family members sing and play for the residents of nursing homes and care homes. While she loves traditional Gospel music, her highest pursuit is to glorify and obey Jesus Christ in all things. Her desire is that, through this singing school, students would be equipped sing the best they can for God’s glory, and that they would be drawn closer to Christ.

Kara Miller

Kara is Alyssa’s cousin and was also homeschooled. Music has been prominent in her life from a very early age, as she grew up in a musical family and a hymn-singing church. She has taken piano lessons for more than 10 years, and also has some experience in harp and organ. She takes voice lessons and sings in a choir. Southern Gospel, especially the Cathedral Quartet, was Kara’s music of choice. Then, she fell in love with shape-notes and convention music. She first attended Do Re Mi Gospel Music Academy in 2023. Now she and Alyssa frequently travel to Tennessee for singing school, singing conventions, and other events. When she’s not working or practicing piano, you might find Kara creating spreadsheets or looking at songbooks. She currently resides in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania.

Dennis George

Dennis is the President of the Alabama School of Gospel Music. He has attended several singing schools, including the National School of Gospel Music in 1977 and 1978. He was present for the inaugural years of the Alabama School of Gospel Music and of the North Georgia School of Gospel Music. Dennis has been blessed to study under Eugene McCammon, Tom Powell, and Ezra Knight. He currently resides in Fyffe, Alabama.

Sam Wright

Sam has grown up with a strong passion for music. He began piano lessons in second grade, but his interest in gospel music and other forms of traditional shape-note music began as a teenager, when he spent much time visiting his grandparents, whose health was declining. During this time, he learned how to sight-read music using shape-notes and he began playing for various churches. He soon discovered the singers continuing the shape-note gospel tradition, and attended several of the larger gospel singing schools, including The Alabama School of Gospel Music and Ben Speer’s Stamps-Baxter School of Music. He went on to study music composition at The University of Mobile. He has taught several shape-note singing schools, and has given private instruction in various subjects of music.
